"As a practicing ophthalmologist in Florida for many years, I see that one of the most common problems is dry eye syndrome. There are different anatomical causes for dry eyes and various drops for lubrication. A deficiency of the lipid layer of the tear film is very common and requires a  different type of lubricating drop. There are two on the market one is Systane Balance and the other is Retaine MGD. The advantage of Retaine MGD is that the main active ingredient is pure mineral oil. It is in a cat-ionic micro emulsion, positively charged, and therefore lasts much longer on the corneal surface.  The other huge advantage is that Retaine MGD is the only preservative free formulation of this type. Preservatives tend to aggravate dry eyes.  Most of my dry eye patients prefer Retaine over any other lubricating drop."
